I had a few hours and decided to hit the water hoping our recent snow and rains helped push a few wary fish into their natal streams. Thao T. met up with me and we pounded the runs to no avail. We stopped and talked to the hatchery employee, Duane. He indicated that the chief biologist had been out test fishing for wild steelhead but had come up empty handed. Only a few more days before the closing of the season.
It was good to get out but wet and soggy. River levels looked low still and there was no signs of fish. I had a tug but could have been a snagged fish by the way it was fighting before it popped off. I’m looking forward to March 1st and the eastern WA basin lakes opener. Hopefully the lakes will be ice free and temps warm with little winds.
I did spot a few steelhead at the base of the falls. As the big hen guarded her red you could see smaller males beside her. Hope these fish continue the legacy and their progeny return another day.
