I was interested in seeing more of the green river and had some time to do a float. Invited Sun Y. and Jeff H. to meet up and drift the Whitney to Highway 18 section. The forecast called for wind, rain and cloudy skies which was spot on a we launched at 07:30.
There were quite a few other empty trailers that had made the float and likely pushing off early to be back in time to watch the Seahawks game. I wasn’t thrilled with being cold and wet but the allure of chums on the fly had me back for more. It had been years since I drifted the river but it’s like riding a bike, you never forget.
Sun had the first for on just above the Metzler bankers which we anchored near the closet bank. Since I didn’t want to pull anchor and lose the spot he tried to fight it while I attempted to land it with the net. It never made the net and popped off from his purple ESL (egg sucking leech). I wasn’t able to get a takedown at that slot tried flies, centerpin with no luck. Even the buyers were having difficulty.
The rain finally stopped and we had a hot lunch, enjoyed the blue skies and sunshine on our faces and made the most of our float. The run is winding down and another year until we likely float the green again. It’s such a pretty resource so close to a major metropolis, I wonder why we don’t take advantage of it more often.
