Some men bring chocolates, jewelry, or roses, my Valentines day was spent in waders trying a new fishery. The smelt population has been good enough for the WDFW to open the dip net fishery for two days this year. Last week was the first day but couldn’t make it out but was curious enough to give it go for the Presidents holiday weekend.
The limit of smelt is 10# per license and only open from 6 am to noon. Good thing I had some intel from Phil H. on a great spot on the Cowlitz off Camelot Road near Castle Rock. I was a bit worried since the dippers weren’t pulling big bags of smelt only 1-2 at a time.
Dad and I went downstream near the sand bar and the action changed. Dipping yielded 1-2 and at times half a dozen. We started at 8:15 am and was finished up by 10:45.
Our weekend plans also involve a Razor Clam dig in Long Beach which opens tomorrow. Long Beach is a charming town filled with a nice boardwalk, shops, and miles of Pacific Beach. I’ll try my hand at some surf perch fishing tomorrow as well.
