With a name like Huling it must have been his lucky day. I was yearning to get back out to try a new fishing spot that I’d done some research on last week. The weather, and marine forecast were both excellent for an afternoon searching for some Ling Cod. However it was another week of negative tides with some big swings, generally not favorable for the toothy creatures.
We met at noon and had the boat launched and ready to make the run towards the new stomping grounds. I marked a waypoint and the bottom looked super fishy with plenty of structure and big boulders and places for bait, and big ling cod to hideout. We fished in waters ranging in 25-65′ deep working our flies hoping to entice the ling cod.
While the ling cod bite was slow the black and blue rock bass along the quillbacks was pretty entertaining. We hooked 12-15 fish between the two of us and Phil K. latter jumped on and got an undersized ling of around 19″. The usual spots weren’t productive so we agreed to give the new spot a try again and good thing as Jeff H. was able to connect with a 27″ Ling cod, just enough for the fish box.
All in all an epic day on the sound finding new locations and enjoying some good food, music, conversation, friendships, and of course good fishing.
Nice going! Area 10 around Alki point I presume? We did pretty good with Ling a couple weeks ago in Possession Point.
