Wdfw announced an early opener for MA 12, hood canal two weeks ahead of the regular schedule. Since the Arima is still out of service I decided to trailer up the Grady in hopes of learning new spots and getting to know our new surroundings.
We found a few spots between 57-75′ of water that were fairly good for big all male Dungeness crab. Not even a female was caught in the three pots we soaked. We did also keep a few nice Red Rock crab as their claws and overall size impressed over the smaller Puget Sound versions. The crab were large, a few measuring over 9″!!! Wow!
The meat is sweet and after tasting the. Hood canal variety won’t likely not spend too much effort crabbing once back in Seattle.
Also found out that Tom Nelson is our neighbor, lives just a block away. What a wealth of knowledge and experience. We chatted a bit and he offered us some cherries and apples from his trees.
