I am figuring out the prawning game: location, depth, bait, and proper equipment. The first day was pretty good for 7 licenses, we were able to scratch out 6 limits. Today my goal was to limit for 5 licenses.
Browns Bay in 300′ of water on a nice contour was the key for success. A prawn bait mixture of Super Prawn pellets, black label herring, fresh ling cod carcass, soybean oil, and Friskies cat food.
Ching W. and Tom E. would join along with my sister and dad. We met at Edmonds at 06:00 and assembled the gear, loaded the boat and motored out for the 3 mile run North. Once we found the right depth, we dropped pots at 07:00 sharp and gave them a good 45 minute soak.
The first few pulls were good yielding 3.5 limits, but we had to keep working the depths to finish strong. We even caught an octopus in the Kufa Ladner pot! I called wdfw and confirmed that it was OK to keep at the location we were prawning. Bonus!
The crew all did a wonderful job moving, packing and cleaning up the boat once finished and back to the wash down area. I need a nap!
