In Korean tradition, the first full moon in October is marked by celebrations with the harvest. Familys get together, they eat, drink, play games and enjoy their version of Thanksgiving. Since we never really celebrated Choosuk growing up, I figured the best way to ‘play games’ was to go fishing.
I think we’re about at the tail end of the Coho run, but the marine forecast was decent enough to make the run from West Seattle to Westpoint to hopefully find some larger salt silvers. Joe H. and I met up at 06:00 and were the first ones to the parking lot at Don Armeni. Within 15 minutes of that arrival, about a half dozen other boats and fishermen decended at the launch getting into the water and pushing off with the same quarry in mind.
I haven’t fished out of West Seattle for some time and the rising sun behind the Seattle skyline is always an impressive sight and always appreciated.
Westpoint Lighthouse is about a 4 mile run to the NW and it took about 20 minutes to get to since we were on the lookout under the dark skies for dead heads or water hazards. Once we reached the green can, noticed there were a handful of other anglers working the waters.
Marking lots of bait and schools of fish, mostly at the top of the water column between 50-100′.
Sunrise over Meadow Point, glorious!
As nice as the sunrise and morning conditions were, it quickly changed with ominous clouds and Southerly winds picking with white caps. Layering up and having the right gear is essential when fishing in an exposed boat.
We managed to land two keeper fish. The first was a small resident coho, good for the fry pan. This big hen was the largest Coho I’ve seen this season. While it doesn’t appear very large in the above photo, it was very hefty pushing 12+# if not bigger. The fish took an Ace Hi Fly fished with a No bananas flasher with 75′ of cable out.
The glorious morning turned to this and we decided to call it by 10:30. It was a great coho season marked with great action in Edmonds. I won’t target it again, but will save those days for winter blackmouth which kicks off on November 1st.
